Xeomin

Xeomin is a neurotoxin offered at Portica for treatment of forehead wrinkles and several other cosmetic concerns. Similar to the other brands of neurotoxins, Xeomin is made from botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, which causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Xeomin is FDA-approved for several indications, including cosmetic treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Xeomin is used to treat all the same facial lines as Dysport, Botox and Jeuveau, such as horizontal forehead wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet.

The effects of Xeomin take about 4-5 days after injection to be visible. The results last a similar duration as the other neurotoxins, which is typically about 3 months. In some instances, the results of neurotoxins can last longer. Examples of sites where Xeomin and neurotoxin injections can last longer include the armpit area for excessive sweating and the jaw muscle for excessive jaw clenching.

Although Xeomin is newer to the US market, over 84,000 people have been treated worldwide with injections of Xeomin. Interestingly, the US is actually the 20th country to approve this newer neurotoxin. Xeomin is manufactured and produced with no additives, just the active ingredient which is botulinum toxin type A. It does not need to be refrigerated before use like the other neurotoxins do, and this can simplify the handling and distribution of Xeomin.

The most popular areas of treatment with Xeomin are the 3 regions of the upper face: the horizontal forehead lines, the frown lines between the eyebrows and the crow’s feet.
