For Men

Botox

The number of American men getting botox injections—which relax the facial muscles to minimize lines and wrinkles—has skyrocketed 250% over the past decade.

Dr. Allen notes that her male patients have become much more open and proactive about their appearance-related concerns in the last 5-10 years.  “my male patients who have tried Botox look better, feel better, and believe it gives them a competitive edge.  There’s also less of a stigma associated with cosmetic procedures these days.”

What are the most common areas for men to have treated?

The most common area men choose to have treated is the furrow that runs down between the eyebrows.  Botox works very well to diminish the wrinkles in this area.
The two next common areas to have treated are the horizontal lines that run across the forehead and the wrinkles on the sides of the eyes (crows feet)

How long will the effect of Botox last?

Botox will wear off after 3-5 months and the motion will return to the treated areas.  The depth and intensity of the wrinkles in the areas treated may be lessened for a longer periods of time.

Can Botox work in a preventive manner?

Yes, absolutely.  Patients who start Botox treatment early and keep up with treatments can avoid ever developing deep wrinkles in the areas treated.  Younger patients are catching on to this and people are starting to use botox at younger ages.  Dr. Allen recommends that people start using Botox from the age of about 30 depending on the severity of their wrinkling.

Will my Botox injection look natural?

Many people undergo Botox injections and the results are so natural looking that you never know anything has been done.  You can expect natural looking results that simply turn back the clock and make a person look less stressed and weathered.

Is there anything different about Botox for a man vs a woman?

Men have bigger stronger muscles and require larger dosages of Botox to get the same results as women.  If larger dosages are not used then the results are not as dramatic and the botox will wear off quickly

Are there any side effects?

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect.  Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours can occur, but this is rare.  Some patients also develop eyebrow or eyelid ptosis (droop) caused by the toxin migrating into the surrounding area and causing temporary paralysis.  It’s disconcerting ut does pass.  Patients are advised not to rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection, or to lie down for 3-4 hours after injections.
